Chicago\u2019s Advance Base makes a stop in Winnipeg to promote the newly released and beautiful\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal Companionship<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Along for this leg of the tour is the band Friendship, a low-wave dark-pop group from Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading up the ensemble is Dan Wriggins, who I had the chance to chat with about Friendship\u2019s new music, live set, and touring experiences.<\/span><\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early on in our conversation, Wriggins mentions that Friendship is working on some new recordings, and are starting the process of mixing. Friendship had two releases last year in 2017, an EP in May called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F\/V Hope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a full length LP in November called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shock Out of Season<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe new music will sound closer to the ep than the full length record,\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cWe recorded the full length and then had some leftover songs, and we recorded those as an EP later and released that first. Then we released the full length later that year.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the band\u2019s newest recordings won\u2019t be released before their show in Winnipeg, their set will include a good deal of new material, along with some of the music that they\u2019ve put out already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I asked Wriggins to try and describe the band\u2019s sound on the new material. \u201cWe\u2019ve got some long notes,\u201d he jokes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friendship has an ever evolving process of figuring out and discovering their sound. \u201cI feel like the sound keeps changing, but I usually say it\u2019s quiet. Quiet but with a lot of musicians,\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to make something that\u2019s a little bit dark and wavy and shifting- as opposed to songs with a lot of different sections and dynamic changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think a lot of the stuff we\u2019re trying to work on is about gradual change\u2026 Waves, like a bubbling cauldron, instead of big explosions,\u201d Wriggins says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friendship&#8217;s music explains these descriptions for itself \u2013 single-direction forms slowly build up anticipation and emotion with lyrics that emote raw honesty. The full band brings a quiet intensity that can seem almost effortless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>[When you bring a song to the band, are there a lot of changes to what you originally have, or is it just a matter of adapting to make it work?] <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I ask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel like both kind of happen. Whenever I bring a song to the band I usually have just recorded a demo of me playing chords on piano or guitar and singing it, then everyone comes up with their own parts and we work on it together,\u201d Wriggins explains. \u201cSometimes I come in with a direction or idea that I want to try, but all the time, whatever the other members come up with \u2013 or what we come up with together- is always new for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wriggins says that whenever he\u2019s writing, he could never predict how a song will be adapted to the full band, but he\u2019s always pleased and inspired with the results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>[What can we expect from your newer songs, lyrically?]<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel really good about how they\u2019ve been coming together,\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cThemes have kind of emerged lyrically and end up being reflected in the music too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wriggins notes that mind reading is a common theme. \u201cA lot of the songs &#8211; I didn\u2019t realize (until) looking back \u2013 it seems that I was writing about relationships between people, and how we interact with each other,\u201d he says. \u201cThese (new songs) in particular, it feels like I was writing about how nuts it is when you can be talking with someone, and it\u2019s incredible how well you can communicate, and how that person seems to know exactly what\u2019s going on in your head.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He mentions a new song called \u201cClairvoyant.\u201d \u201cIn the chorus there\u2019s two people talking and one of them makes a joke about reading the other person\u2019s mind,\u201d he says. \u201cAnother song called \u2018You Already Know,\u2019 has the line that refrains: \u2018you already know what I\u2019m going to say\u2019- as in, we connect real well, and you can guess how I feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can use it too like, \u2018why the heck did you ask me when you already know what I\u2019m going to say?\u2019\u201d he jokes. \u201cI feel like there are a few serendipitous themes throughout the record in line with that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>[How do you like touring? Do you make a lot of connections with other bands?]<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s a huge part of why it\u2019s so much fun,\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cFor me, why touring can continue to be fulfilling is because you keep meeting people, often they\u2019re not musicians but more often they are. I could always go back out on tour and be like \u2018whoa, everyone is different, and meeting new people is always inspiring and challenging.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever toured with any act where it hasn\u2019t been a really fun and generative relationship between the bands,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTouring with Owen (from Advance Base) in particular, and we\u2019ve toured with him before, right off the bat he\u2019s a really nice and funny guy so hanging out with him is fun anyway,\u201d Wriggins says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friendship toured with Advance Base earlier this year from Chicago to Austin, and previously tripped together to South by Southwest Music Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe usually tour in this Dodge Ram pickup truck with a big cab, and there\u2019s five of us,\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cBut if we\u2019re ever touring with another band, and they have an extra spot for one person in their vehicle, we try to do that. And with Owen, since it\u2019s just him (as a solo act), he\u2019s always got room for at least one of us in his vehicle so we always get to hang out and talk with him as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>[We\u2019re really excited to have you in Winnipeg! Is there anything specific about the show we should look forward to?]<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is our first time in Winnipeg, we\u2019re excited!\u201d Wriggins says. \u201cOn this tour, I think the plan is to backup (Advance Base) on a few songs. We\u2019re huge fans of his music, and I was really obsessed with it when I first heard it a few years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur music\u2026 it\u2019s good. We\u2019re gonna f***ing rock,\u201d he jokes with confidence. \u201cI\u2019m always consistently blown away by how talented everyone else in my band is, so I imagine other folks might be too. Owen is a spectacular songwriter as well, so it\u2019ll be a treat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Winnipeg band Iansucks will open for Friendship and Advance Base on October 22.
