Shane Bunting, aka Madchild, has been through some difficult times these past five years. The heavily autobiographical 16 track solo LP Dope Sick<\/em> largely chronicles his battle with drug addiction. After hitting rock bottom and nearly dying from his addiction he secluded himself in his home studio and focused on making music. Dope Sick<\/em> starts off with the gloomy and eerie sounding \u201cDevil\u2019s Rejects.\u201d<\/a> Right off the bat we have a standout track filled with Madchild\u2019s captivating and aggressive flow along with DJ Revolution\u2019s tight cuts and scratches. Madchild is back folks!<\/p>\n

The tone of the album is set. \u201cGrenade Launcher\u201d<\/a> sees him team up with fellow Swollen Member Prevail and Slaine. Producer C Lance provides a melodic b-boy-friendly soundscape. \u201cMonster\u201d<\/a> is a brass heavy standout track where Madchild enthusiastically states his love of the underground: \u201cFuck a mainstream rapper, that\u2019s my hashtag.\u201d (On that note, follow him on Twitter @MadChild57<\/a>.) \u201cWake Up\u201d chronicles the first time he popped Percocet. On this reflective track he raps over the mellow and jazzy production of Rob The Viking. \u201cDickhead\u201d (which has been available online for a few years) is a self-deprecating, lewd, yet hilariously funny track \u201cAs a kid I wasn\u2019t making any sense. Screaming out her name, standing naked on a fence.\u201d The lyrics in the closing song \u201cWanted\u201d<\/a> are very introspective and touch upon the frequent subject of his challenge with drug addiction: \u201cIt\u2019s pretty crazy when your dreams were so close. You can touch \u2018em, now they seem like old ghosts.\u201d Dope Sick<\/em> is a hard-hitting album from Madchild that has many standout tracks. It\u2019s one of the very few hip hop albums this year that I can listen to without pressing skip\u2026 and that is dope sick!
