Holiday season is here, and there is plenty of activity around the Heart of the Continent!<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThursday, December 6<\/strong><\/p>\n

The time is finally here! After two months of hard work on behalf of staff and volunteers — as well as advertisers, artists we’ve interviewed, and other behind the scenes folks — the Dec\/Jan edition of Stylus<\/em> is set to hit the streets! The fine brothers at the Rose N Bee have let us use the space there to throw a launch party, where you can grab copies of the new issue fresh from the press.<\/p>\n

And a party wouldn’t really be that rocking without some music. We’ve got Mitten Claps <\/a>opening the night at 11:15, The Gunness<\/a> on at Midnight, and the Unbelievable Bargains (look for our feature on these boys in the new issue) at 1:00 am. Come on down after 10:30 (earlier, if you fancy stand-up comedy — every Thursday at the Rose N Bee is open mic comedy, hosted by Mike Green, from 9:00 t0 10:30) and help us celebrate.<\/p>\n

Come on down to the party. Cost of entry is a mere $5, which goes to help keep <\/em>Stylus operating into the future. See you there! <\/em>-SB<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get ready for a sleepless weekend, because starting this Thursday is Juss Jazz\u2019s second Uninterrupted: Holiday Jazz and Blues Review. What is this you might ask? Well, come out Thursday night, and experience two full days of jazz and blues music from 16 different bands, nonstop. Some of the performers include Soul Station, Jupiter Storm, and Vibes Rock on Thursday, and Mariachi Ghost, DB and the DeadBeats, and Blue Noise on Friday. Be sure to look out for the fire dancers and hoop performers (there both nights), and some silent auctions!<\/p>\n

Be sure to come check out Juss Jazz\u2019s Uninterrupted 2: Holiday Jazz and Blues Review, starting this Thursday and going for two full nights at the Manitoba Hydro Place Gallery at 360 Portage Ave. Tickets are $20 per night, and are available at Juss Jazz (240 Portage) and the Downtown Biz (426 Portage). <\/em>– SD<\/strong><\/p>\n

Saturday, December 8th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Winnipeg staples Boats<\/a> are celebrating their super-accessible release, The Marblemouth Cassette<\/em>, at the Windsor Hotel.\u00a0 A three-song tape including a cover of a Cannon Bros. song, it follows the heels of Exclaim! streaming the first single<\/a> off their next record, due February 5th, 2013, on Kill Rock Stars.\u00a0 Joining them will be Ultra Mega<\/a> and Oldfolks Home<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sunday, December 9th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just like their name, Winnipeg’s folk-pop band Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers <\/a>make music that’s odd, romantic, symphonic, and whimsical. A couple years ago, at Fringe Fest, they set their music to an equally memorable performance of Where the Wild Things Are<\/em> and received accolades galore. If you missed that, be sure to check out their video release party this Sunday, which is titled Hans My Lion<\/em><\/a> (also the name of their 2011 CD which Stylus reviewed<\/a>), and which involves puppets. The synopisis: It’s “the story of a woman who gives birth to a male lion named Hans, and the struggles of Hans’s adolescence to come to terms with his outsider identity.” Warning: you may also dance your pants off.<\/p>\n
