{"id":684,"date":"2010-03-09T12:15:23","date_gmt":"2010-03-09T18:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/?p=684"},"modified":"2010-03-09T12:15:23","modified_gmt":"2010-03-09T18:15:23","slug":"review-besnard-lakes-are-the-roaring-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ckuw.ca\/stylus\/2010\/03\/09\/review-besnard-lakes-are-the-roaring-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>THE BESNARD LAKES<br \/>\nAre the Roaring Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Wn0MFB67Ft0\/SyOwU7L7r4I\/AAAAAAAABnU\/QgLYZQY6xnM\/s320\/The+Besnard+Lakes+are+the+roaring+night.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" \/>Three years was maybe a little too long for one of Montreal\u2019s grandest rock bands to follow up their magnificent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Are the Dark Horse<\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Are the Roaring Night<\/span> still has all of the touchstones that made the Besnard Lakes\u2019 last album stand out\u2014dreamy harmonies, My Bloody Valentinesque vocals, catchy choruses, and mind-blowing walls of sound. The core of the band is guitarist Jace Lasek and bassist Olga Goreas, a married couple who supply all of the wonderfully interweaving melodies. They own a recording studio in Montreal, and no doubt they\u2019ve used the studio as integral part of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Are the Roaring Night<\/span>. There\u2019s the constant harmonic feedback in \u201cAnd This is What we Call Progress;\u201d the soundscapes that are \u201cLike The Ocean, Like The Innocent Pt. 1\u201d and \u201cLand of Living Skies Pt. 1;\u201d and the pristine reverb of \u201cLight Up The Night.\u201d Because of its front and centre vocals, and its thundering conclusion, the lead single \u201cAlbatross\u201d is a standout track, but only one of few. However, taken as a whole, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Are the Roaring Night<\/span> is a platter of sounds for your ears, because that\u2019s what the Besnard  Lakes designed with in mind.
