{"id":745,"date":"2010-04-07T10:29:08","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T16:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/?p=745"},"modified":"2010-04-07T10:29:08","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T16:29:08","slug":"review-arrington-de-dionyso-malaikat-dan-singa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ckuw.ca\/stylus\/2010\/04\/07\/review-arrington-de-dionyso-malaikat-dan-singa\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Arrington de Dionyso &#8211; Malaikat dan Singa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-746\" title=\"arrington-600x600\" src=\"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/arrington-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"arrington-600x600\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/>Did Frank Black and Alice Coltrane have a secret lovechild?\u00a0 If they did, they probably named him Arrington de Dionyso.\u00a0 Seriously, <em>Malaikat dan Singa<\/em>, the third disc from the former front man from Old Time Relijun, is equal parts \u201cDebaser\u201d and \u201cPtah el Daoud,\u201d bringing together the spastic movements of late \u201980s grunge and the disregard for musical form of the outermost avant-garde jazz.\u00a0 The result is a record that is extremely playful, albeit irritating at times. <em>Malaikat<\/em> features Dionyso performing on a multitude of instruments, along with label-mate Karl Blau on bass and drummer Andrew Dorsett\u2014and while the instrumentation is quite strong throughout the record, it\u2019s Dionyso\u2019s vocals that holds everything together.\u00a0 Sounding like gibberish, the lyrics throughout the record are actually Indonesian translations, sung with a fierceness that is without parallel.\u00a0 This, coupled with song-structures that sound like a hybrid of worldbeat, Albert Ayler, and the weirder moments of the 1980s American underground, <em>Malaikat dan Singa<\/em> ends up being a most rewarding listen.
