It\u2019s distorted to shit because it\u2019s recorded poorly on a laptop, but for one guitar, one floor tom and one snare drum, these two releases are quite the beachside party. Mac DeMarco\u2019s voice goes between half-talking-half-singing and falsetto \u2018Oohs\u2019 while he\u2019s mostly singing about young love. \u201cYou\u2019re what I want\/come surround me,\u201d he sings on \u201cBasketball Kids.\u201d On <em>Eating Like a Kid<\/em>, released not even a year later, DeMarco\u2019s expanding his vocal and song writing ranges\u2014he goes from the surf pop of \u201cSwim Dream\u201d to the \u201960s doo-wop of \u201cDeborah\u201d to the sober indie pop of \u201cBecause I\u2019m a Boy\u201d on which he sounds almost like one of the dudes from Grizzly Bear. He\u2019s going in so many directions and, hell, even the recordings sound cleaner. <em>Eating Like a Kid<\/em> is going on my year-end list. That is, unless Makeout Videotape makes another two or three recordings this year.
