Recontextualized interpolations of an eclectic collection of artists\u2019 material interspersed with moody\/morose drum beats comprise most of the material here, harkening back to a somewhat poppier version of Maxinquaye.<!--more--> It appears that by now Tricky has completely purged himself of the vaguely corporate sounding butt-rock that plagued albums like <em>Blowback<\/em> and <em>Vulnerable<\/em> and has reacquainted himself with his trip-hop roots, while being somewhat influenced by current R&amp;B trends. \u201cNothing Matters\u201d is slick horn-and-string driven track reminiscent of the 90s, and \u201cBonnie and Clyde\u201d sounds like a modernized version of Tricky\u2019s old sound. Also of note is \u201cParenthesis,\u201d a cover of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bL_9M65Ked4\" target=\"_blank\"> The Antlers&#8217; \u201cParentheses\u201d<\/a> that features Peter Silberman and, while being a cover of a strong song by The Antlers, is functionally and practically identical to the original. One wonders why Tricky bothered including it on the album at all. <em>False Idol<\/em>s is far from perfect, opening with \u201cSomebody\u2019s Sins,\u201d an uninspired reading of Patti Smith\u2019s verses from \u201cGloria,\u201d and penultimate track \u201cHey Love\u201d features Tricky obnoxiously rapping over a beat cobbled together from samples of Japan\u2019s \u201cGhosts.\u201d All in, <em>False Idols<\/em> is uneven but provides a nostalgic experience for those pining for the glory days of trip-hop.
