One listen to \u201cComputer Face\/\/Pure Being\u201d or \u201cPickled!\u201d and you\u2019ll see what I mean; drums, bass lines, glitch noises and other sound effects fly by as quickly as the Star Gate sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey. L.A.\u2019s Flying Lotus has been flying a flag of trip-hop so far, but on this latest disc, it\u2019s almost closer to Sun Ra\u2019s space-rock-jazz\u2014there are the aforementioned brain-blistering jazz-nodding tracks, (FlyLo is Alice Coletrane\u2019s nephew, don\u2019t ya know) but also laid-back tracks like \u201cArkestry\u201d will flatten you out, and make you appreciate the drum roll, and pure electronic filters\/bliss! But of course he\u2019s got his dance floor shaker as well: \u201cDo the Astral Plane.\u201d An elaborate album, yes. Unlistenable, hell no.
