{"id":8700,"date":"2014-03-25T15:17:10","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T15:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/?p=8700"},"modified":"2014-03-25T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2014-03-25T15:17:10","slug":"no-el-prado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ckuw.ca\/stylus\/2014\/03\/25\/no-el-prado\/","title":{"rendered":"NO &#8211; El Prado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/2014\/03\/25\/no-el-prado\/no-el-prado-300x300\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8701\" alt=\"NO-El-Prado-300x300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stylusmagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/NO-El-Prado-300x300-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Before releasing its 2011 debut EP, <em>Don\u2019t Worry, You\u2019ll Be Here Forever<\/em>, Los Angeles six-piece NO was a relatively unknown indie rock band with few aspirations beyond writing atmospheric songs buttressed by evocative songwriting. <!--more-->But after a series of successful years touring with the likes of Best Coast and Father John Misty, the group led by Bradley Hanan Carter (vocals) has released a memorable full length debut on Arts &amp; Crafts, <em>El Prado<\/em>. Carter\u2019s voice has already been compared to those of Matt Berninger (The National) and Paul Banks (Interpol), but NO\u2019s impact is felt through a combination of organic parts: the swelling guitars of Reese Richardson, Ryan Lallier and Simon Oscroft, the adept drumming of Michael Walker and proficient bass lines of Daniel Stentz provide an elegant constellation of forces revolving around the vocals. Of the storytelling on <em>El Prado<\/em> there is much to say, and upon multiple listens it becomes difficult to reject any likeness to Berninger. Carter unabashedly exposes listeners to his self-consciousness and regrets, but harmonizes them with hopeful, confident tunes. On \u201cWhat\u2019s Your Name,\u201d an example of the former, Carter recalls a fleeting romance, \u201cTell me darling I can\u2019t stay\/Turned around and she said\/Can\u2019t you tell me what\u2019s your name\/I\u2019m singing of a lonesome\/Of a lonesome day.\u201d <em>El Prado<\/em> is at once a charming display of songwriting, and again a gratifying piece of music that proves comparisons can tell only half the story. Indeed, NO has perfected a sound all its own.
