The Neighbourhood is an indie rock group from California. \u00a0They\u2019re made up of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists and Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, drummer Brandon Fried and bassist Mikey Margott. Last year they made a name for themselves with their hit \u201cSweater Weather\u201d and released one EP<\/em> I\u2019m Sorry and their debut full length<\/em>, I Love You. In between stops on their tour, <\/em>Stylus caught up with guitarist Zach Abel for a quick Q&A.<\/em><\/p>\n

Stylus: You\u2019ve released three albums, Thank You<\/i>, I Love You<\/i> and I\u2019m <\/i>Sorry<\/em>; phrases that get thrown around a lot. Was there an idea behind that?<\/strong>
\nZach Abel:<\/strong> Those three phrases and the songs on the albums have a theme with each other. Those phrases \u201cthank you,\u201d I love you,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d are things that people abuse and overuse and don\u2019t really mean when they say it.<\/p>\n

Stylus: When you guys started out, you kept a low profile for a while\u2026<\/strong>
\nZA:<\/strong> At first, we didn\u2019t want anything to outshine the music in any way. We wanted the music to be the first thing people noticed, not the way we look or dress or anything like that, just the music.<\/p>\n

Stylus: Your videos, the outfits you wear on stage, are black and white. Can you tell me about the black and white theme you guys have going on?<\/strong>
\nZA:<\/strong> We wanted something to really make us stand out. Jesse said “Hey let\u2019s make everything black and white. Let\u2019s take black and white and make it our own; so that people think of it when they think of us.”\u00a0It\u2019s something people did the fifties, it\u2019s really cool to bring it back and make it our own and modern.<\/p>\n

Stylus: You call your fans hoodlums, how did that start?<\/strong>
\nZA:<\/strong> Every big pop or celebrity has a name for their fans. Justin Beiber has “Beleibers,” Lady Gaga calls her fans “Monsters.” We thought if we tried to call them “hoodlums,” it\u2019d be pretty funny. Then it started sticking.<\/p>\n

Stylus: Any tracks that really get people going?<\/strong>
\nZA:<\/strong> Yeah, I really like “Afraid.” It\u2019s a lot of fun to play. It gets a really strong reaction every time.<\/p>\n

Stylus: You did a cover of Destiny\u2019s Child \u201cSay My Name\u201d and Justin Timberlake\u2019s \u201cCry Me A River\u201d\u2026<\/strong>
\nZA:<\/strong> We were in the UK, doing BBC Radio One, doing a BBC Radio One Live Performance and you have to do a cover. We were thinking of a cover to do and Jesse was like \u201cOh we should do say my name, that\u2019d be really cool.\u201d Then after we practiced it, it sounded really cool and we were, like, \u201cOh my god we should mash that with \u2018Cry Me A River.\u2019\u201d \u00a0So we did it and ended up really liking it and it sounded really cool.<\/p>\n
