{"id":9017,"date":"2014-05-27T14:40:47","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T14:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/?p=9017"},"modified":"2014-05-27T14:40:47","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T14:40:47","slug":"teenage-kicks-spoils-of-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ckuw.ca\/stylus\/2014\/05\/27\/teenage-kicks-spoils-of-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenage Kicks \u2013 Spoils of Youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/2014\/05\/27\/teenage-kicks-spoils-of-youth\/a2645099898_10\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9018\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9018\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stylusmagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/a2645099898_10-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"a2645099898_10\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brothers Peter and Jeff van Helvoort, the only constant members in Toronto\u2019s Teenage Kicks, have taken up arms on the good-guy side of one of the few important wars worth fighting: the one against the death of honest rock \u2018n\u2019 roll.<!--more--> And while their preceding releases held fast their commitment to the cause, their debut full-length, <i>Spoils of Youth<\/i>, finds them on the front line, hurtling fearlessly toward whatever destiny decides their future, or end, will be.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve got all the weapons they need \u2013 the stomp-yr-feet spastic tambourine chorus of \u201cCurse Words,\u201d the sing-along bombast on \u201cDigging Up Old Bones,\u201d the slow-burn riff-rock heaviness of \u201cTime Is Not a River,\u201d and the album\u2019s one moment it allows a sonic breather, \u201cStone and Undulation,\u201d a paean to the down-and-outers working on getting wasted that declares bluntly, \u201cgonna be someone tonight\/gonna get messed up and die.\u201d Peter van Helvoort\u2019s massively gut-punching vocals have the ability to really drive home a rage-against-the-dying-of-the-light attitude, but here, at the most vulnerable moment on the album, show they\u2019re capable of the sort of nuance that can make or break a line.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d be remiss not to mention this record was re-recorded after a first effort yielded unsatisfactory results. It took twice the work, twice the sweat, twice the blood to release <i>Spoils of Youth<\/i> properly, the way Teenage Kicks wanted it to be heard. That dedication to rock n roll is apparent in the heart of these songs, and one can only hope that no matter how many blows fate delivers the brothers van Helvoort \u2013 losing band members, money problems, sonic disagreements, etc. \u2013 they keep getting up again, yelling about it, and reminding us why that\u2019s important.
