Yes, this is a reissue of an album where the best-known song is called \u201cCryin\u2019 These Cocksucking Tears.\u201d<\/a> No, it isn’t a comedy album. I’m as surprised as you are. Lavender Country is, or was, Patrick Haggerty\u2019s project. As you may have guessed by now, it was the first country album released by an openly gay singer. Since it\u2019s from the \u201870s, it\u2019s country in the sense of \u201cmusic that \u00a0you can listen to around your grandparents if they\u2019re cool with gay people\u201d instead of \u201cpop music but without the fun bits,\u201d so you can retain your hipster cred by listening to this. The lyrics are witty (anyone who refers to the joy of giving blowjobs as there being \u201cmilk and honey flowin\u2019 when you\u2019re blowin\u2019 Gabriel\u2019s Horn\u201d can’t be that bad), and even though Patrick Haggerty\u2019s in possession of an inherently funny voice, his music never actually strays into unintentional comedy territory.<\/p>\n

And the album isn\u2019t entirely funny. \u201cWaltzin\u2019 Will Trilogy\u201d excoriates the practice of administering shock treatment to gay people, and \u201cI Can’t Shake The Stranger Out of You\u201d achieves the trick of being convincingly sexual while being about the emptiness of casual sex.<\/p>\n

Of course, \u201cCryin\u2019 These Cocksucking Tears\u201d is the most notable song on the album. Any song enlisting a passionate female country singer to belt out \u00a0that she\u2019s \u201ccrying these cocksucking tears\u201d has to be. But what\u2019s most important to remember about the album, is that far from being a winking joke, it\u2019s actually pretty good.
