{"id":9322,"date":"2014-08-05T15:07:07","date_gmt":"2014-08-05T15:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/?p=9322"},"modified":"2014-08-05T15:07:07","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T15:07:07","slug":"dub-rifles-no-town-no-country-eps-and-rare-recordings-1981-1984","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ckuw.ca\/stylus\/2014\/08\/05\/dub-rifles-no-town-no-country-eps-and-rare-recordings-1981-1984\/","title":{"rendered":"Dub Rifles \u2013 No Town, No Country: EPs and Rare Recordings 1981-1984"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stylusmagazine.ca\/2014\/08\/05\/dub-rifles-no-town-no-country-eps-and-rare-recordings-1981-1984\/a1845007642_10\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9323\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9323\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stylusmagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/a1845007642_10-287x300.jpg\" alt=\"a1845007642_10\" width=\"287\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never seen a Dub Rifles show, don\u2019t feel bad but don\u2019t hold your breath either: they last graced a stage just over 30 years ago and there are apparently no plans to reunite. <!--more-->However, we can all be thankful that new Winnipeg label Sundowning Sound Recordings decided to announce their presence with <i>No Town, No Country,<\/i> a compilation of Dub Rifles\u2019 EPs (<i>No Town<\/i> and <i>Boom!<\/i>) interwoven with live cuts that bring the disc to a just-right 55 minute length.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>No Town<\/i> tracks are remixed from the original masters, while the <i>Boom!<\/i> offerings are pulled from the original vinyl. But don\u2019t fret over quality: the disc sounds just fine, and such concerns are thankfully washed away by the content. \u201cProduction of Funds\u201d is one of the funkiest\u2014and best\u2014to be heard here, both studio and live versions. The song has the most cracking bass\/sax interplay on the entire disc, and visions of James Chance will enter your head even before a twitchy guitar lead gives way to a speedy sax lick. \u201cStand\u201d deserves a spot in the canon of propulsive, singsong punk tunes that become rallying cries for frustrated youth. Most lines feel widely applicable, but upon perusing the extensive and personal liner notes from Colin Bryce (vocals\/guitar) you will discover \u201cStand\u201d was inspired by outrage over factory farming practices.<\/p>\n<p>Inflections of power pop, ska, and old-timey swinging rock n roll are all over this disc, suggesting Dub Rifles took cues similar to those of their contemporaries on a few different branches of the punk tree. \u201cPunch\u201d and \u201cOver the Top\u201d are among the best songs that appear here only as live recordings, serving as a pretty solid argument for the very release of a CD filled with songs that nearly predate the format itself.
