Holy Shit! Winnipeg is a-buzz with activity this weekend! Get out & have some fun, friends. It’s party time!
Thursday, September 27
American producer, DJ, and songwriter DJ Shadow hits the Pyramid tonight! Now, I’m not much a DJ kind of fella, but I must admit I’ve followed DJ Shadow’s career more than any other producer of DJ on the planet since coming upon a write-up of Endtroducing… in Rolling Stone magazine back in the days of my youth. We didn’t have a music retailer in my hometown at the time (unless you count Zeller’s CD section…) but I tracked the disc down in Vancouver on our yearly trek south down BC’s Highway 97 and it blew my mind. Shadow’s collaboration with U.N.K.L.E. further cemented his rep as one weird motherfucker in my mind, and to this day he’s the only DJ whose record I’ve ever purchased. Never having seen the man spin, tonight is an exciting one for me, and likely hundreds of other Winnipeggers. Get ye to the Pyramid, and prepare to get down!
Presented by Winnipeg Jazz Fest, tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Tim Hoover is opening the show, and the party starts at 9pm. – SB

This weekend it’s time to show off the cultural side of Winnipeg for Culture Days 2012. This event may not be completely oriented towards music, but it thrives to keep culture alive and well in Winnipeg with events such as Nuit Blanche (more information on that below), a Dark Scary Night at the Museum, live musical performances at the Park Theatre, a DIY DJ event at the CKUW 95.9 FM, 24 Shows in 24 Hours, Lola Blue Band at Le Garage Cafe, A Winnipeg Folk Festival Ukelele Jam, Aerial Dance Performances, and much more.
Be sure to head to as many events as possible this weekend, whether it be day or night, for some great art, music, and just about whatever else Winnipeg has to offer. For more information on events, be sure to check out the Culture Days website. -SD

Nuit Blanche is Mighty Musical
The yearly artistic fervor that reaches full steam sometime in the hours of 8pm-2am is also known as Nuit Blanche, a worldwide celebration of the arts. Here in Winnipeg, our city’s events lineup makes sure to feature musical elements alongside visual art, performance art, and dance. After getting whiskey’d and gingered Prohibition- style at the Free Press Cafe (9:00 pm – 2:00 a.m.), why not head over to Cinematheque to unleash your inner Madge/Blondie/MJ at the screen (9:30 – 11:00pm)? Not feeling too hot about your vocal talent? Artist Monika Wall will be at Gurevich Fine Art performing/leading You Can Sing!) from 8:30 – 10:30. If you’d rather listen, singer-songwriter Ashlee Bart will be at Aceart from 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. serenading all merry wanderers of the night. Local acts Aceta, Viridians, More Than A Hand and Be Air are also making soundwaves that night at Exchange Community Church 7:30 – 10:30pm, and venues such as the WAG and Le Garage Cafe are also supporting the event. There’s so much to see downtown – you’re bound to find something that fills you with delight.
Nuit Blanche public events (including visual and performance art) are free. Visit their official and Facebook pages for locations and more info. – AY
