Jazz Fest! Summer weather! Thunderstorms! Weekenders!

Thursday, June 13, 2013

So summer has begun to slowly embrace Winnipeg, which means only one thing… Jazz Fest is coming to Winnipeg.  The scene; a mangled cube like stage, backpacks abound and an expansive patio stretching around Old Market Square. Check out the free bands in the square from 7-pm till midnight, highlighted by the Keith Price Double Quartet and the always danceable Dirty Catfish Brass Band, with their localized version of the New Orleans brass sound. If you aren’t into outdoor jazz, check out the Hoots at the Windsor for their usual Draft Night as well.

Jazz Fest continues on Friday evening in the park, with a Latin themed evening going from 6pm until 1am, graced by local act Trio Bembe. Once again, if a Latin infused dance party isn’t your ball game, check out gloom rock outfit Naysa, playing for free at Joe Black’s Coffee Bar in St James. Look for them to play two forty five minutes, including covers from Weezer and Nirvana. In closing, the undercard of the night seems to be the White Stripes tribute evening at the Cavern; go forth and enjoy your 90’s blue rock apparently.

Highlighting the weekend is the Saturday night line up at Jazz Festival, featuring such local luminaries as Royal CanoeBoats and Cannon Bros, with the second half hosted by Stylus Magazine. Also making an appearance is funkadelic styled singer from Toronto, Maylee Todd. Finally, if you prefer the styles of indoor music, check out the Poorboy CD release show at the Cavern. Featuring Paincave and local noise rockers Surprise Party, this show will fail to disappoint, especially for the cheap rate of only $7.

So much to do, so little time. Jump on your bikes & ride! -ZF
