For those of you who dig the sounds of the old time juke-joints as reimagined by 21st century pickers and crooners, you best pick up this latest from Luke Winslow-King. The Coming Tide is a perfect example of how one can pay homage to the greats that have gone before without coming off hackneyed, or worse, cartoonish. Winslow-King’s adeptness at the bottleneck slide and his understated, yet confident vocal delivery shine through on every tune, as do chops of the album’s players. Many of the tunes, particularly the title track and “I’ve Got My Mind Set On You,” feature beautiful harmonies from Esther Rose, who gets credit up front on the album cover, and for good reason. Together, and with their killer back-up band, Winslow-King and Rose deliver a rich brew of early jazz, Delta blues, folk and gospel that somehow comes off both timeless and fresh off the grill.
