St. Lucia – When The Night

St. Lucia is South African pop singer/songwriter Jean-Philip Grobler, his songs, and his band.  Born in Johannesburg, Grobler travelled the world as a youth choir member, and studied music in Liverpool before setting up shop in Brooklyn. When The Night is a very consistent effort that flows smoothly from track to track even as tempos and beats change. The key is simplicity in each of the layers; simple and catchy melodies, pithy soundbites in plain-speak for lyrics, and a delicious kiss of world beat in the synth fills. All these layers add up to create a pop sound that is as modern as it is retro. The title track ends the album with airy 80s synths reminiscent of FM before soft landing with a dreamy ambient outro. Best described as well-crafted island vibe synth-pop, When The Night is light and bouncy dance music.  The album contains no less than four potential singles yet is more than a collection of songs,  playing like a single cohesive piece.  A near perfect pop album.
