As 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Stylus, The UWSA and CKUW will be celebrating this proud milestone through an ongoing series of events and initiatives.
The official 25th anniversary of our first issue comes up in October. We will be building steam for a major celebraish to coincide with the launch of our October/November 2014 issue, by re-releasing some old gems from CKUW’s digitized tape archive with every new issue of our 25th volume. At the same time, we’ll be digging back into our own archives, and reissuing a series of classic Stylus issues throughout the year.
Time Tunnel Tapes is a feature where a local cassette from the CKUW archives will be re-discovered and made available online for readers who enter the code found on the cover of our archive re-distribution series.
One vintage re-issue will hit the stands again alongside our new issue every two months. On the cover of the re-issued mag you will find a sticker with download info for the Time Tunnel Tape release featured. You can then also join the conversation and share your memories with us online.
The first installment of the Time Tunnel Tapes series features the RWPO demo tape from 1997, which is available via download code. The codes will be affixed to the covers of 200 copies of Stylus’s Feb/March 2004 Fundrive issue, which will be distributed with copies of our current issue to select locations around Winnipeg. Features from the issue include interviews with Mary Gauthier (returning to Winnipeg this month!), AFI (ha!), and Jim Bryson, among others. You can find the website right here, but you gotta find the download codes on the magazines (which are one use) to get the goods!
Since its first publication alongside CKUW’s program guide in October of 1989, Stylus has acted as both a space to discuss independent local, national, and international music, and a springboard for young contributors to get involved in publishing. Former editors of Stylus include Bartley Kives, Jenny Henkelman, Ben McPhee-Sigurdson, among others, and contributors have gone on to work with the CBC, the Winnipeg Free Press, VICE, and Maclean’s, among other media outlets and music industry gigs.
Look for re-issued copies of Stylus, complete with download code for Time Tunnel Tapes, at these partner locations: Into the Music, Wild Planet, Union Sound Hall, and Half Pints Brewing Co, and on campus at the University of Winnipeg at the Hive and CKUW.
