Winnipeg is a bumping place this weekend, as Fringe Fest gets rocking and the bars are a bumping. Get out and see some live music!

While looking for an event to write about, I was instantly drawn to Winnipeg blues-rock group The Perpetrators’ snarly yet laid-back garage sound. Whether you’re a long-time fan of this home-grown band (they’ve been around since 1999 and have since then earned a Western Canadian Music Award as well a Juno nomination) or just want to be around some solid guitar work and energetic stage presence, this may be something worth checking out.AY

The Perpetrators play the Times Change(d) at 8pm this Friday.

Festival season is in full swing in Winnipeg, and it’s time for yet another: the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Now there are plenty of concerts going on for this event, but one of the ones I am the most excited for – although not technically on the weekend – is Cannon Bros, The Dirty Catfish Brass Band, and Jason Kirkness on Monday, July 23rd. One of the nice things about this show is the genre difference between each act. The Cannon Bros are a two-piece indie rock band, The Dirty Catfish Brass Band an eight-piece funk/jazz brass group, and Jason Kirkness a solo country act. It’s a great show to come out to, no matter what genre you gravitate towards. – SD

Be sure to come out the Old Market Square (aka the Cube) this Monday for just a tiny bit of what the 2012 Winnipeg Fringe Festival has to offer (it’s also free!)

While listening to the Thursday afternoon show, The Book of Right On on CKUW, host Jenny Henkleman played a rather rad tune by one rather rad dude, Geoff Berner. The song is one that, according to many unfruitful Google searches, does not exist on ye ol’ net (at least according to the song title that I recall.) That aside, I can attest to his last wild and wacky release, Victory Party. Wonderfully quirky in all it’s accordion glory, Victory Party is refreshing, weighty, and folky (figure that one out ey).

Anyways, Geoff will be at the Times Changed on Monday, July 23 at 8 pm. Early enough to still feel not-too-tired for work the next day. Awwwwwww, isn’t that nice?? Thanks Geoff! – Victoria King
