Weekenders 11/08 – 11/11

It’s gettin’ cold outside, but there’s plenty of tunes to check out this weekend! Get ye to a music venue!

Friday, November 9

The Lytics, one of Winnipeg’s most buzzed about hip-hop projects, is throwing a party at the Pyramid to celebrate the release of their new full-length, They Told Me.  Released on October 16th this year, the album follows the success of their 2009 self-titled debut.  The group has been criss-crossing the country and generating a lot of buzz, but really, Winnipeg doesn’t need the internet to tell them that The Lytics’ shows are awesome.
Tickets are available at Urban Baker and Kustom Kulture for $10, and doors are at 9:30 PM.  The show is at the Pyramid Cabaret (176 Fort St.), and is 18+ with ID. DP

Saturday November 10

Not that Gordie Johnson or Big Sugar need any extra push to pack butts into seats this Saturday, but the opening act Balconies would probably dig it if you got there early and didn’t spend their whole set standing in the beer line. The band is really cranking out the jams, with a new EP out and a new video. Travelling up and down the lonesome highway, hustling their tunes and trying to make a name for themselves on the Cold Road, Balconies are one to watch.

The Balconies are opening for Big Sugar at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Saturday. Show starts at 8pm. -SB

This weekend, get ready to listen to some of Winnipeg’s best folk/bluegrass music with The Crooked Brothers! Opening up for them will be Doctor Strange and A Band of Mysterious Bandits. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Doctor Strange, he used to go by the name Nereo II and just underwent a name change to Doctor Strange. This combination of folk with spoken word should mean a fantastic show.

Come down to the WECC this Saturday, November 10th. Doors are at 7:30, Doctor Strange at 8, with The Crooked Brothers taking over at 9. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door, and are available at The West End Cultural Centre, Ticketmaster, and Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store. -SD
