Concert Review: Manitoba Metalfest

Black t-shirts peppered the landscape of South Osborne on the beautiful evening of May 10th as The Park Theatre hosted the latest edition of Manitoba Metalfest. The annual weekend gathering has been an eagerly-awaited occasion for Winnipeg’s metal community for many years — understandably, given its history of bringing in big-name bands to a city often overlooked on tour itineraries. It doesn’t take much to lure local headbangers to Metalfest — even if the lineup isn’t your scene, the festival’s raucous and jovial atmosphere is unparalleled. But this year’s iteration featured a few reasons for extra excitement.

Hillbilly Highway – Jeff Stuart & The Hearts

Jeff Stuart & The Hearts are a six-piece indie roots band out of Edmonton. Two albums deep, and with a bunch of festival gigs and big-time opening spots behind them, Jeff & The Hearts are taking to the Highway to spread their sound across Canada. With a stop in Winnipeg tonight with local lovelies The Sweet Alibi, Jeff took some time out of last-minute tour prep to chat with Stylus about their latest record, Equal Parts Reason & Moonlight, and touring and writing with a large band.

They Say / Enjoy Your Pumas / The Secrets / JICAH // @ Park Theatre 09-28-12

On September 28th the Park Theatre was taken over by four very talented bands for the release of THEY SAY’s debut CD Disguises. First on stage was Enjoy Your Pumas, followed by The Secrets, then JICAH, and lastly THEY SAY. All of the bands gave very energetic performances and the enthusiasm from the audience seemed to accumulate after every performance. There was a notable amount of energy during the JICAH performance which managed to get the majority of the crowd dancing and involved.
