send + receive, Winnipeg’s annual “festival of sound” marks its 14th anniversary this year across a variety of venues. Featuring performances from international artists Akio Suzuki (Japan), Tomoko Sauvage (Japan/France), Nmperign (USA) alongside Canadian artists the Rita (BC), Jeffrey Allport (SK), and Manitoban Angela Forget performing works from a variety of national and international artists, the fest is a must for those interested in experimental music and sound art at its wildest.

Friday, October 19
Friday is the night Nova celebrates the release of their debut full length, Midnight Midnight, on Disintegration Records. Check out the article Stylus wrote on them here, looking at how the album was put together and the distinct influence Winnipeg has on the musicians. This record is great, and the show at Ace Art Inc. is going to be fantastic.

Friday, October 19
Rae Spoon, Canadian transgender electronic/pop musician, is now adding “author” to their name. Friday evening will see Mondragon become a cozy haven for an evening of readings and spoken word poetry by several of Winnipeg’s queer artists, accompanied by Rae Spoon’s blend of synths and distorted drums. This promises to be a thought-provoking and inspiring evening! –AY
Show is at Mondragon (91 Albert St.) and starts at 7 pm. The fee is on a sliding scale of $5 – $20 (pay what you can).
Wednesday, October 24
This show won’t be happening this weekend, but there’s nothing wrong with staying out a little late on a school night.
Aidan Knight just released Small Reveal, the much anticipated follow-up album to 2010’s indie favourite Versicolour, this past Wednesday and will be coming through Winnipeg on Wednesday, October 24 with fellow BC act the Zolas. On this new album, Knight has built upon the much beloved sounds of Versicolour and goes a little bit father and deeper. The mellowed rich vocals, an earthy heady drum beat, as well some contoured and controlled guitar tones are all there, but developed and bigger. Rest assured though, nothing’s really changed. It’s just gotten better.
Not to be undermined, the Zolas have also recently released their newest album, Ancient Mars, which has already found success with it’s first single, “Knot in my Heart.” In contrast in Knight, expect more playful lyrics and catchy pop vibes (and maybe even some dancing!).
Doors open at the Park Theatre at 7:15, show starts at 8 with Leif Vollbekk first, followed by the Zolas and Aidan Knight. –VK
