Weekenders – 07/12 – 07/15

If you’ve recovered sufficiently from Folk Fest to remember your own name, make sure to check out some of these great gigs this weekend.

Friday, July 13

The mysterious extradimensional musical entity that is Smoky Tiger will be landing in Winnipeg once again on Friday the 13th to play a set full of spaced out mind meltingly bizarre jams at the one & only Times Change(d). The cause for celebration? None other than some sugar-time-flashback-joys by way of Big Bad Burton Cummings. Holy fuck. I wish to Nammtar I was in town for this one, but I’ll be running back to Saskatoon instead. If you are in the city, and you like getting wild & weird to the tunes of Big Burt, you best be getting down to the Times. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!  – SB

The weirdness gets going at 10pm. Make sure to bring a 10$ bill to get in, and plenty of cash to convert into whisky.

Saturday, July 14th

After Folk Fest and a long week of hot, hot weather, it’s time to relax. Except, it’s the weekend, so it’s time to get out of bed and come out to see some local music. If you left Folk Fest hungry for more – or were not able to go and are just hungry for some tunes – come check out Mas Headspace and Sons of York for a funk rock, indie rock show to calm the Folk Fest blues. – SD

Catch Mas Headspace and Sons of York at the Cavern (112 Osborn Street) this Friday, July 13th, beginning at 9 pm.

Saturday, July 14th

Saturday promises to be blazingly beautiful out! For the 4th year so far, an extensive list of musicians including Sierra Noble, Troy Westwood, and Keewatin Otchitcha Traditional Women’s Drum Group (19 this year; check out the full lineup here) are performing at the Forks’ Oodena Celebration Circle from 1-10pm to honor  and raise awareness about Manitoba’s missing and murdered women. Events include live paintings and a community feast, culminating in a candlelight vigil at 10pm. Donations are welcomed, but the event underlines that your presence is just as meaningful support for the families and memories of the women and girls that are no longer with us. AY
