Brainchild of ex-pat Vancouverite Stephen McBean, Pink Mountaintops’ latest, Get Back is a tidy little package of glam inspired, vaguely psychedelic pop nuggets. Like, if you dig T-Rex, Berlin-period Bowie, Roxy Music, and Lou Reed (obvs), then this could be right up your alley. Though, despite wearing these influences on his sleeve, McBean does homage up the right way, making unmistakable allusions throughout, yet never just aping the greats. The lead track, “Ambulance City,” is a perfect example of this; a compact yet sprawling sounding pseudo-krautrocker with repeat reference as the song closes to “Station to Station,” one of Bowie’s best (in my humble opinion). “The Second Summer of Love” is an ode to getting stoned in 1987, listening to “Dayglo tapes” in Oak Bay and fucking shit up. With only one misstep (“North Hollywood Microwaves”), which may not even be a misstep if you’re high on the right mix of whippets and downers, Get Back is a great little album from an artist who just keeps pumping out the goods. This one is going to see a lot of play on the campus/community charts, and rightfully so. Now, who wants to go get weird under a bridge and listen to this on a boombox?
