Y’know, I disagree with Mat Klachefsky when he told me during our interview (published in the last issue) that Hut Hut isn’t a continuation of Boats. Sure, the glockenspiels are gone and he’s matured as a songwriter — the death of friends being a notable recurring theme — but he’s still got his trademark nasally, high-pitched vocal delivery and I’m picking up on a lot of similar melodic motifs. There’s no one who could possibly hear both bands and fail to make the connection between ’em, that’s all I’m sayin’.Cool album. Good riffs that make me bop my head around. The abrupt ending of “EpiPen” transitioning into the opening of “You Can Have It All” was jarring in a way I’m not entirely sure worked, but why must music “work” all the time? Can’t a band just do stuff for fun? Looking forward to their next album in another six or seven years. Hope this mag’s still around for someone to review it in!
