More often than not, we’re mistaken for a secret study space. People wander up our flamboyant yellow stairs, hoping to find repose and peace amidst a sea of textbooks and cell phones. Instead they stumble upon a den of music geeks, activists, anarchists, journalist-types, etc. There are posters on the walls, stickers attached to almost every surface, and odd pieces of nostalgia that have been propped up on bookshelves and cabinets (see the Hillary Clinton nutcracker above Program Director Robin Eriksson’s desk, for one example). This attic-like sanctum is home to CKUW, 95.9 FM; that campus-community beast on your radio dial, smack-dab in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. Continue reading “CKUW Celebrates 50 years on the air!”

Royal Canoe has been getting a lot of attention, both at home and internationally, over the past few years. After releasing a couple teaser EPs, their long awaited full length is ready for the world. “There is some indefinable difference between Canada and the U.S. communities just on the other side of the border. I recognize that a lot of it could be in my head, but in any case it feels different when I return to Canada after having been in the States.
The psychology of national borders is interesting. When we are driving through Minnesota on our way to the border, it feels ‘northern’, but as soon as we cross into Canada, Winnipeg feels “southern” because of my mental map of its location within the province, rather than its location within the continent.

Saskatoon’s Powder Blue are creating quite the buzz around themselves; a heavy, fuzzed out, droning buzz. The psychedelic quartet released their debut disc Dream in Black earlier this year, and have played stellar gigs across the West since. With a new member and some new tunes in tow, they return to Winnipeg this weekend to rock the Windsor with fellow ‘Toon towners Shooting Guns. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of How To Clean Everything, Fat Wreck Chords is reissuing the “seminal” punk LP from Winnipeg’s Propagandhi on August 20th. The reissue includes all the original tracks, remastered, as well as three tracks cut from the album by Fat Mike, and a “long lost” four song demo. Also available, as a bundle or on its own, is a complete guitar and bass tablature book, compiled by Propagandhi’s Chris Hannah himself. As pre-orders of the reissue are (ostensibly) rolling off the shelves, Stylus sat down with Hannah over local beverages at Cousin’s on a hot July day to discuss the ins and outs of reissuing a piece of work you’d rather forget existed, and what’s up on the Propagandhi front moving forward.
