The value of POC safe spaces

Several months ago, I found myself on an airplane headed for Toronto. A few hours before the flight, I was crouched over my luggage, splayed open on my bed, a wounded soldier, clothes spilling out like viscera. I was hesitant about going to Toronto for the Canadian Federation of Students’ extensively planned event, the Racialized and Indigenous Student Experience (RISE) Summit. Often, the act of listening to music is like trying on a costume. We all have songs that help us to transform, whether that means bolstering our confidence or softening the stress of a long day. Rarely does music get under our skin and shake us up a bit, or force us to turn inward and confront ourselves. Enter Winnipeg experimental band, Civvie. Together, the three-piece creates tracks that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck in a way that you didn’t know you wanted.    Continue reading “Civvie”

Surprise Party :: Sh-Shake Your Booty

surpssIt was the late 60s and early 70s. Psychedelic rock was everywhere. Vans. Hippies (not nature hippies, ‘Led Zeppelin’ hippies I guess). Weed. Booze. Nudity. More weed. This EP puts you right there. There are curtained windows in the van, and a rug. Lazy smiles and slow reaction times. Sweat it out. Turn up the Hendrix. Surprise Party stands up to this sound, both live and recorded. Continue reading “Surprise Party :: Sh-Shake Your Booty”

Some of this is nostalgia and tradition, but as journalist Bartley Kives mused in his book A Daytripper’s guide to Manitoba, Manitoba’s licence plate should read undervisted, and underappreciated. As always, Bart has a point. While there are a number of great summer festivals that people flock to, one of the most heartening and relaxing is the Harvest Moon festival in Clearwater Manitoba. Disco Needs A Squeeze

There’s a knock at my back door, and in walks Mischa Decter. He wastes no time in expressing what a disgusting day it is outside. After the walk in the brutal heat and humidity, he has no desire to take the turkey breast (with horseradish sauce) Subway sandwich out of his backpack. Eating fresh just isn’t the same when you’re on the surface of the sun, so we got down to business. Continue reading “Disco Needs A Squeeze”
