  • The 5th Annual Student Radio Marathon

    CKUW and the UWSA are proud to present the 5th Annual Student Radio Marathon on Thursday, November 10. This is a day reserved exclusively for students to access the airwaves.

    The Student Radio Marathon provides a platform for students to share information/music with our listening audience; empowers students to make their own media and contribute their voice to the public discourse; helps develop literacy, research and presentation skills; is lots of fun!

  • Student Radio Marathon 2016

    On Thursday, November 10 CKUW 95.9 FM hosted, along with the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA), the 5th Annual Student Radio Marathon on Thursday, November 10. Below is the schedule and links to the programming. Enjoy!

    6am – 6:30am : Trouble with the Sandman’s morning tunes.

    6:30am – 8am : CKUW Volunteer and U of W Student Ugonna will wake you up with an hour of positive words, talking about student health and wellness.

    8am – 8:30am : Shannon Loewen shares about the Luke 18 Project.

    8:30am – 9:30am : The Uniter, the U of W’s student newspaper, will introduce you to some of their topics and contributors, and a sneak peek at their upcoming Speaker’s Series event.

    9:30am – 10:30am : Representatives for the Canadian Federation of Students bring you an hour of student advocacy-focused programming.

    10:30am – 11am*: Coralee McKay and Rachel Dunsmore talk soccer, life, abstract thoughts, and shares positive vibes.

    11am – 11:30am : The Aboriginal Student Council shares initiatives and upcoming events.

    11:30am – 12pm : Tessa Wiwchar and Paul Hewak give you a healthy dose of social media analysis.

    12pm – 12:30pm : The International Students Association talk about the importance of being part of ISA.

    12:30 pm – 1pm : BB on Campus sharing some Israeli flair.

    1pm – 1:30pm : Mahlet Cuff spins some original selections for listening ears!

    1:30pm – 2pm : Joseph Bernacki offers 30-minutes of the best in country music.

    2pm – 3pm : The UWSA share their ideas, opinions, and initiatives with you for an hour.

    3pm – 4pm : TYP Stories from 2C06 – tune in to hear original narratives written by the students at the University of Winnipeg!

    4pm – 4:30pm : Kevin Rodriguez presents 30 minutes of music.

    4:30pm – 5pm : The U of W’s Rhetoric Student Group gives you sneak peak of their Student Ideas and Coffee night.

    5pm – 6:30pm : New CKUW volunteer (and student) Kyle Loewen brings you two solid hours of music!

    6:30pm-7:30pm : The LGBT* Centre gives you a preview of HomoHop!

    7:30pm – 8pm : Emmanuel Igunbor will inspire listeners to pursue their dreams with his music!

    8pm – 8:30pm : Mohamed Behi & Chris Johnson share some music, while also promoting and discussing what is going on campus to increase accessibility.

    8:30pm – 9:30pm : Emma Narvey DJs nothing but the best. Don’t miss it!

    9:30pm – 10:00pm:

    10pm – 10:30pm: Augustine Chipalata spreads love (and also play 90’s music). Don’t miss it.

    10:30pm – 12am : Genevieve Gay interviews athlete Lindsay Hilton, and plays music with a theme of “International Women of Mystery” with brief stories of each the musical performers (Eartha Kitt, Yma Sumac, Diamanda Galas, and Edith Piaf, among others).

    Have you ever wanted to be on the radio? Do you have a passion for sharing music and ideas? CKUW is always recruiting volunteers for jobs on and off air. Volunteer training is free and easy, workshops are scheduled for October and throughout the year.

  • Welcome Victoria King

    We welcome Victoria King as CKUW’s new Program Director. While you may have seen or heard Victoria around CKUW you may not know about all her radio accomplishments.

    Victoria joined CKUW in 2010, she has hosted music and spoken word programming as well as completing extensive work on production and documentary projects. As Volunteer Coordinator she has trained dozens of volunteers and reached out to the community on and off campus. Victoria is involved at the national level with the Equity Committee of the NCRA. Her undergraduate project ‘Is This Thing On? An Ethnography of Campus and Community Radio’ will appear in the inaugural edition of ‘Crossings’, the journal for undergraduate research at the University of Winnipeg, expected in late fall of 2016.

    “I want you to know that I’m so excited to start working as CKUW Program Director; more than anything, I’m really looking forward to working with all of you to keep building this radio community that we all care about so much.”

    DIY DJ kicks off our ‘Pass The Mic’ celebration, a full week of participatory radio. For ‘Pass The Mic’ CKUW hosts invite community members on-air to share their music ideas in a casual, conversational manner.

    Pass The Mic runs from September 30th – October 7th, join in as we pass the mic… to you!
