Home Recording Resources

If you are thinking about recording from home, here is a list of options. CKUW has USB mics that can be signed out if you want better quality than what you might have at home. Keep in mind that without a studio you won’t be able to create as complex a program, but if you can continue submitting recordings or playlists with the soul & personality of your show that will be amazing!

This list isn’t comprehensive, if you have favourites let us know.

CKUW Station ID’s & Stingers

Here is a folder of station id’s and other material in mp3 format for use in your recordings: CKUW Official ID’s

Here are some scripts for creating new ID’s or stingers SCRIPTS FOR STATION IDS

FREE TOOLS (PC/Windows, Mac & Linux)

These programs are used at CKUW. They are complex audio editors so there is a bit of a learning curve, you can find tutorials online or call staff for help.

—- Audacity – https://www.audacityteam.org/
—- Ocenaudio (free, similar to Audacity)) – https://www.ocenaudio.com/
—- Reaper (free until 2021) – http://reaper.fm/
———- Free Reaper licence here

PAID TOOLS

These programs can make it very easy to create a show but they cost money. For both Total Recorder & Audio Hijack you can basically DJ from and program on your computer and record everything you playback. With a mic attached or built in you could create a show ‘live’ to MP3.

PC/Windows

—- Total Recorder (Standard edition) $17.95 CADhttp://www.totalrecorder.com/

Mac

—- Audio Hijack $59 USDhttps://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
—- Piezo (can only record one source at a time) $19 USDhttps://rogueamoeba.com/piezo/

MOBILE

It is possible to create an entire program on a mobile device but it could prove frustrating depending on the size of your screen and the age of your device. Below are the names of some apps I’ve tested (marked with *) or have been recommended elsewhere. As with anything on mobile app stores beware, there are a lot of crummy apps out there or programs that appear to be free but need payment to unlock basic features.

Android

—- Lexis Audio Editor* (Save in aac format in free version)

- Voice Memo apps
—- ASR Voice Recorder
