Weekenders – 07/19 – 07/22

Winnipeg is a bumping place this weekend, as Fringe Fest gets rocking and the bars are a bumping. Get out and see some live music!

Friday, July 20th, 2012

While looking for an event to write about, I was instantly drawn to Winnipeg blues-rock group The Perpetrators’ snarly yet laid-back garage sound. Whether you’re a long-time fan of this home-grown band (they’ve been around since 1999 and have since then earned a Western Canadian Music Award as well a Juno nomination) or just want to be around some solid guitar work and energetic stage presence, this may be something worth checking out. Hillbilly Highway – Folk Fest in the Wheat City

by Sheldon Birnie

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Brandon Folk, Music and Art Festival in the Wheat City. Boasting an impressive line-up of artists, including Judy Collins, Kinnie Starr, Geoff Berner, Nathan, the Crooked Brothers, and many more, this year’s festival promises to be another great time. Running from Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, the Brandon Folks, Music and Art Festival offers onsite camping at the Keystone grounds, a main stage that is beautifully shaded, as well as a kids’ tent and a site for spoken word poetry. The Wheat City’s version of the Birds Hill whoop-up is an underrated and over looked gem in the beautiful province of Manitoba. Continue reading “Hillbilly Highway – Folk Fest in the Wheat City”

Grand Master :: Rocking with the Masters

By Scott Wolfe

The gents in Grand Master have been on the Winnipeg metal scene for quite some time. Their new full length, The Dream Alive, shows some impressive songwriting, taking the listener on a musical journey through the band’s influences and then some. Stylus sat down with vocalist/bassist Alec Schaefer and guitarist Shane Barron at the Yellow Dog to catch up and discuss the new album and summer plans. Weekenders – 07/12 – 07/15

If you’ve recovered sufficiently from Folk Fest to remember your own name, make sure to check out some of these great gigs this weekend.

Friday, July 13

The mysterious extradimensional musical entity that is Smoky Tiger will be landing in Winnipeg once again on Friday the 13th to play a set full of spaced out mind meltingly bizarre jams at the one & only Times Change(d). The cause for celebration? None other than some sugar-time-flashback-joys by way of Big Bad Burton Cummings. Holy fuck. I wish to Nammtar I was in town for this one, but I’ll be running back to Saskatoon instead. If you are in the city, and you like getting wild & weird to the tunes of Big Burt, you best be getting down to the Times. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!  – SB Continue reading “Weekenders – 07/12 – 07/15”

Hillbilly Highway – Lovely week of Folk goodness

by Sheldon Birnie

Well, friends, it was certainly a lovely week for folk music fans in the Heart of the Continent this past week. My own week started off in a downpour that cancelled Good Old War‘s set at the Cube to launch the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Nonetheless, they showed everyone at Main Stage a good old time Thursday evening. I skipped out on the Wednesday night of the Festival to see the Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show at the Park Theatre. Fred’s band was tight as always, and the old guy delivered a solid set full of old hits and new beauties off his latest release 6 Volts. With an opening set and back-ups by the lovely Tif Ginn, the show certainly set the bar high for the Folk Fest weekend. Continue reading “Hillbilly Highway – Lovely week of Folk goodness”
