Winnipeg State of Mind

“Rap is something you do, hip-hop is something you live.” – KRS-One

2017 was the year hip-hop took over the music industry. With huge hits by Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar among others, it seems only natural for Vulture Magazine to call 2017 “the year hip-hop won the music business.” Through streaming platforms like Soundcloud, Spotify and YouTube, hip-hop now reaches it’s biggest audience ever. The music has come a long way from DJ Kool Herc throwing jams in Cedar Park in the Bronx, but hip-hop still struggles to find acceptance in the mainstream pop radio world. Live show review : Warming, Soup, Dana Lee

The cold wind subsided and soothed the air in Winnipeg on the evening of February 17, but the weather wasn’t the only thing warming up. Brady Allard’s new project, Warming, played their first set on that Saturday evening. The lineup at the Handsome Daughter included two other groups: SOUP and Dana Lee. Girls With Guitars

At least six years ago Kalyn had an idea to create a TV series about the inspiring and ambitious local girls of Winnipeg, who continuously impress the city with their stringed skills. Fast forward a bit and add Cindy and Jenny, change TV series to documentary, and throw an application in to MTS’ Stories From Home, and we have the beginning of Girls With Guitars. Inverted Serenity :: As Spectres Wither

Inverted Serenity’s third album, As Spectres Wither, shows the band forward thinking, pushing their sound to larger and finer, more sinister and dynamic forms. Although the new album isn’t a huge departure from the band’s previous releases, it showcases their skill in composing songs that mesh technical flair and ferocity with finesse and melody, knowing the importance of contrasts and nuances when it comes to more extreme forms of music. Warming

After years playing in bands like Slow Spirit, Odana, Somebody Language and under his own name, Brady Allard’s newest project, Warming, lives up to its own name. Allard will be playing his first show as Warming at the Handsome Daughter on February 17th. The first single from Warming’s eponymous debut album, “White Lies”, was released on January 23rd in anticipation of the show. Continue reading “Warming”
