    Host Mike ‘Dastier’ Litwin will be spinning tracks from Joy Division; Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles – Live at Diamond Head; Jimi Hendrix and the the Band of Gypsies – Live at the Filmore, New Year’s Eve 1970; and Patti Smith – Live from an ‘official’ bootleg;, As well Mike will feature more songs by punk’s true bad boy: Sonny Vincent, playing with both The Testors and The Dons. Local artist Fame, and various Australian pre, punk and post punk bands including the Triffids, New Christs and Radio Birdman (‘Australia Calling’ preview) fill out the bill.     Although this week marks our 11th birthday on the FM dial, CKUW is actually a lot older. In 1963 a student named David Shilliday, along with physics prof. Ron Riddell started a closed circuit station at U of W. Here’s a page from Sept. 1963 ‘Freshie Handbook’ introducing radio to the unsuspecting campus:

    So does this mean we’re a middle aged pre-teen??

  • Shades of Classics

    Shades of Classics is proud to present the radio premiere of Symphony No. 1 by Canadian composer Bruce Mitchell. In describing this work, Bruce says that “Symphony No. 1 was written as a prayer for peace following 9/11 and the resulting onslaught on the Middle East, and yet is also a wake up call to humanity. There are also shades of ‘Lord of The Rings’ themes within it as I see a parallel between the two.” The full-length work will be introduced to our listeners by the composer himself.
