  • New shows this week!

Posted by CKUW PD on October 29th, 2019

You love to see it, folks: A new handful of fresh-faced, starry-eyed, silver-tongued, and keen-eared volunteers have recently completed their introductory training, and now, we unleash them onto the airwaves, for your listening pleasure. We’ve got two brand new programs debuting this week, and you’re not going to want to miss them.

Starting tonight (Tuesday) at 10:00 pm, two disciples of the local hip-hop scene, Trouble Child and Walker, present The Come Up – their weekly love letter to the lyricists and beatmakers that you’re not otherwise hearing. Their first show will feature an interview with local rapper Tonzo.

Later this week, on Friday at 3:00 pm, indie-folk dreamboat Jacob Brodovsky will introduce the world to Let’s Play DJ!, wherein he will welcome a different guest every week to discuss formative albums and other favourites of theirs. Expect different tunes, different stories, and different vibes each time.

There are more new shows to come yet, so don’t sleep on updates coming soon! And never forget that you could be among the next wave of new programmers here on CKUW. Email [email protected] to find out how you can become one of us.

  • Stylus Magazine turns 30

Posted by Rob on October 11th, 2019

In October 1989 a group of University of Winnipeg students lead by Karla Hilton published the first issue of Stylus Magazine. Over 150+ issues Stylus has represented CKUW and published local music and culture stories from a fresh, underground perspective.

Pick up Stylus for our printed radio program guide, radio volunteer profiles or music reviews. Congratulations to Stylus volunteers & staff! (p.s. a new issue is on the streets soon!)

  • Pass the Mic - happening NOW!

Posted by CKUW PD on September 30th, 2019

After a wildly successful edition of DIY DJ, tradition dictates that it’s now time for PASS THE MIC, the one week of the year where our programmers extend invitations to friends, lovers, enemies, and strangers to make guest appearances on their programs. It’s just one of the ways we hammer home our community-minded mandate here on CKUW.

We’ve already had some great examples of it, with Shades of Classics and The C.A.R.P. getting in on the act. Check out those programs if you didn’t catch them live!

There is more to come this week, with Psycle Radio hosting a who’s who of Winnipeg weirdos: The Famous Sandhogs, Jahmeel Russell, elloweth, and Kiki Kutz. On Listening Pleasures, enjoy a sit-down with local poet Kristian Enright. Be sure to also catch What’s Up Winnipeg on Friday, with an exclusive interview with KEN Mode, ahead of their 20th anniversary spectacular.

All this and more as part of PASS THE MIC week here on CKUW!

Here is a brief glimpse into what you might hear when you tune in starting at 5pm (bearing in mind that the schedule might fluctuate):

5:30pm – Davey reviving an old CKUW favourite, Queer in Your Ear
6:00pm – Khaled featuring an assortment of underground 80s songs
6:30pm – Seth showcasing some of his favourite punk records
7:00pm – Olivier bringing the funk
    7:30pm – Ro shining a light on local hip-hop
8:00pm – Liu discussing cultural differences between China and Canada… and perhaps memes.

Oh me oh my! Honestly, we are delighted to have such a mix of content. That’s exactly what DIY DJ and Culture Days in general are all about. Many of these hosts will be making their radio debuts, and you better believe we’ll be hearing from them again in the future.

  • Fresh programs on Monday afternoon!

Posted by CKUW PD on September 17th, 2019

Summer’s over, and everybody seems to be getting back into the grind. It’s no different for our volunteers – we haven’t welcomed new programming onto the schedule for a little bit, but all that is changing this month!

The Monday block from 1 to 2pm has been taken over by two new locally-produced programs: Movers and Makers with Zanna Joyce airs at 1, where she dives deep into the minds of Winnipeg’s finest craftspeople, artists, writers, and more. At 1:30, Tammy Wolfe takes over with Truth Before Reconciliation, wherein a variety of guests offer critical perspectives on education, public policy, community work, and how they all tie into the idea of reconciliation.

Please keep us in mind on Monday afternoon for back-to-back half-hours of fresh, engaging local radio!

We’d also like to acknowledge Victoria of the Right Cranky Morning Show, as well as Jason of The Moshpit for their countless hours of grade-A work as both of their shows recently have come to and end.
