Weekenders 02/08 – 05/08

August Long Weekend is here! Check out these shows around Manitoba from your Weekenders crew!

Friday, August 3

So here’s an event that I’m going to suggest to you without knowing too many specifics. Although, take comfort in the fact that this event is made exactly for such a purpose –  exploring the unknown and educating yourself. ‘First Fridays in the Exchange’ is “dedicated to bringing together artists, artist run centres, galleries, business and the public for a greater understanding, appreciation and promotion of the arts and the further development of a vital Exchange Area community.” For the first Friday of every month, the Exchange District hosts an ‘exploration’ type of evening – opening it’s doors to the public for some wondering and some pondering of local and visiting artists alike. I wish I could make a ‘Top Picks’ list for you, but I can’t – my own knowledge of the contributors are as limited as yours may be (that’s why I’m excited for this though). My suggestion is to take your time, stroll, venture, observe, consider, repeat. For a full list of all that’s being offered this Friday, check out this link.

If you’re still craving some live music I hear that local groups Alanadale and Mittenclaps will be performing with Calgary band Jung People at the Lo Pub. Doors are at 9, show starts at 10, 7$ w/ ID. – VK

Saturday, August 4th

Every summer, Gimli gets plenty of tourists for simply going to the beach, or for events like the Gimli Film Festival. This weekend is another one of Gimli’s well-known festivals: the Icelandic Festival, which includes events like a Viking encampment, beach volleyball, a fair, and a free concert they call Saturday Nite @ the Pier. This year, the Saturday show features Winnipeg’s exciting bands Hey PilgrimMise en Scene, and finishing off the night (with fireworks, of course), the Noble Thiefs. Saturday Nite @ The Pier takes place at the Harbour Stage in Gimli this Saturday.

The show takes off with Hey Pilgrim at 8:00 pm. – SD
